I had the pleasure of interviewing Mateo Neri, one of the founders of the online learning lab IdeaPow. IdeaPow aims to educate designers about the benefits of bringing their ideas to market through licensing. Neri, an entrepreneur, award-winning designer, and faculty member at the Art Center College and Design, noticed that many of his students and his peers in the professional world of design were ignorant about licensing. According to Neri, the vast majority of design professionals are set on getting a job at a consulting or manufacturing company.
“Design students are never exposed to the world of licensing and innovation – it’s such a mystery to them. In today’s world, there are so many companies looking for ideas. They don’t even know they exist! Licensing fits perfectly with designers, because it allows them to do what they really want: to be creative and to come up with ideas. They aren’t interested in marketing or distribution or manufacturing, and that’s why licensing is such a smart choice,” said Neri.
Unfortunately, most people have a ton of ideas that get shelved or trapped because they don’t know where to take them. IdeaPow empowers designers with a set of ten steps to follow to bring their ideas to market and helpful platforms that track and record their progress. All of the information offered by IdeaPow is available online and can be accessed by computer, mobile, or tablet.
“Users can access their IdeaPow account from home or work or on the go. In addition to informative postings and lessons, we include a directory of companies that are looking for new information and their contact information,” said Neri.
I’m also one of the founders of IdeaPow, and one of the features I like most about the platform is how easy it is to manage, document, and record the process of bringing your idea to market. It’s easy to keep good notes and to follow up on conversations that you started earlier. There’s so much information to keep track of throughout the process of bringing your idea to life that having one place to write it all down is key.
IdeaPow is also affordable! There’s a monthly fee of $30 and you can enjoy a thirty-day free trial period. There’s more information being added all the time, so check it out.
